Where Does the Time Go?

It is hard to believe but this is our last Friday with our little bisons.  Some information for you as we wrap up 2018-2019 and start planning for 2019-2020:

1.  If you expect your child to be away on Thursday (our last day) please provide a self-addressed and stamped envelope so we can mail you the progress report.  If no envelope is provided we will hang on to it until the fall.

2.  If you are not attending our school next year please let the office know asap.  Registrations impact everything from supplies to staffing to room configurations.

3.  The SCC (parent council) reminds you of two on-going fundraisers:  Mabel's Labels (order online at campaigns.mabelslabels.com) and Boston Pizza (give your receipts to the school and when submitted BP gives us a percentage of the sale).  The Annual General Meeting will occur on September 19th at 7:00 here at the school.  Open positions next year are Chair and Treasurer.  Please consider joining the group!

4.  For two years now we have grown and grown - from a projected 307 for September 2017 to 710 for September 2019.  We have added teachers mid-year for two years and want to be pro-active going forward.  Next year we will move to a Term system - meaning students may move to a different class/teacher for term 2 if we add another teacher (due to high classroom enrolment as we have for two straight years).  Teachers are committed to working with their grade-alike partners to create matching year-long plans so that the curriculum is delivered equally.  For example, all grade 3 teachers will teach geometry in term 1.  This forward planning will allow us to create new classrooms for term 2.

5.  Our traffic committee consisting of parents Anusha and Sasha continues to look for solutions for our congested parking issues.  They met this morning, again, with a city representative.  The hope is that the city will consider some changes to the area and host a meeting in September or early October.  Consider carpooling or organizing a 'walking bus' (where senior kids walk and pick up kids along the way) to lessen the number of cars trying to get near the school.  Stay tuned and for now, slow down and watch out for our students.

6.  Our Bring Your Backpack Night will be a two-night event next year, both from 4:30 to 5:30.  Kindergarten students will visit on Wednesday, August 28th and students in grades 1-8 will visit Thursday, August 29th.  Come find the classroom, meet the teacher, and drop off your supplies.

7.  School supply lists are on our webpage and should have been sent to you by your classroom teacher.  You have two options:  order online from School Start and have them delivered to your home or go shopping yourself.

8.  Our Grade 8 Farewell is next Tuesday and we'll be saying good-bye to 41 students.  We wish them the best of luck in high school.  Their energy, maturity, and desire to do well academically had a positive impact on the whole school.  We will miss them.

9.  We will also be saying good-bye to several staff members.  Mr. Lee is moving to Ruth M. Buck School, Mme McClelland, Mrs. Swann, and Mme Youck are moving to Hawrylak, Mme Yeo is moving to Ecole Massey and Mme Longtin will be away for the year.

10.  New staff coming to Wascana Plains include:   Mme Ananfock Kowo (grade 1 French), M. Araneda (grade 6/7 French), Mme Kerr (grade 4/5 French), Mme Rincker (grade 3/4 French), Mme Bautista Chernier (French K), Mrs. Doobay (grade 7 English), Ms. Dobson (grade 5/6 English), Ms. Keyaira Jones (grade 2/3 English), Ms. Livingstone (Specialist), Mrs. Weir (Learning Resource Teacher).

11.  Summer construction includes a new portable on the west side and the library is going to be enclosed in order to become a classroom for the fall.

Growing pains but still the best place to be!  Thank you for your support and enjoy the summer holidays!
